As we move through the last weeks of March, we’ve experienced a whirlwind of changes. The weather patterns have shifted, water temperatures have risen, and redfish have begun breaking out of their winter schools. With the emergence of fiddler crabs from their muddy hideouts, the grass flats are coming alive, signaling the true arrival of spring. These environmental shifts have set the stage for some of the most exciting fishing opportunities of the year.
With the boost in water temps, redfish have started dispersing from their large winter schools and venturing into shallower waters. The increasing presence of bait in the river systems has these fish fired up and on the hunt. Nothing signals the approach of summer quite like spotting redfish tailing on the floodtide flats, aggressively foraging for fiddler crabs.
The recent flood tides have been productive, with fish cruising and actively feeding. We primarily targeted them on the fly using a medium dumbbell-weighted fly, favoring gold or copper for color selection. These hues have been reliable producers in the stained spring waters. However, as good as the bite has been, lower water levels following these big tidal swings have made the fish more selective. Locating them and presenting baits with patience and precision has been key to success.
For those fishing with soft plastics, the golden rule remains: when in doubt, slow it down! Dragging baits across the bottom and allowing the fish to make the decision has been a proven tactic. March has delivered classic spring fishing—productive yet unpredictable, keeping anglers on their toes as they decipher the redfish’s evolving patterns.
Looking ahead to April, anticipation is building. Flood tides toward the end of the month promise another spectacular opportunity to witness the marsh explode with life. With water temperatures continuing to rise and an abundance of food sources, redfish will be fully breaking out of their winter mode. Stay tuned, and we’ll check back in with you next month to keep you dialed in on the bite!
The taste of summer is in the air, and with it comes the vision of giant silver fish exploding from crystal-clear water—tarpon season is almost here. There’s nothing quite like the rush of throwing an 11-weight fly rod at a 100+ pound tarpon, watching it inhale the fly, and then launching into a series of acrobatic leaps. As we look ahead, it’s time to start locking in summer fishing plans.
